The End of Sorrow

A Novel of the Siege of Leningrad in WWII

Surikov Painting Of Bronze Horseman And Saint Isaacs Cathedral The End of Sorrow is a historical fiction novel that follows the city of Leningrad and several characters as they endure the fateful 900 day siege during WWII. The protagonist, Felix Varilensky, is a Soviet Jew and must fight against not only the invading German forces, but also the subtle, and not so subtle, anti-Semitic forces all around him. What he wants most of all is to live a normal life with his love, Katya, but he gets caught behind enemy lines as the Germans surround the city.

The winter of 1941-42 is one of the coldest ever, and after the Germans bomb the central food warehouse, the city of Leningrad runs out of food. Every inhabitant starves. One out of two will perish. Leningrad breaks the siege briefly through the “Road of Life” – a temporary road built on top of a frozen lake. The drama is high, the suspense palpable, and the love enduring.
